West Virginia University president Jim Clements issued a statement Thursday night that criticized the fan behavior during the Pitt-West Virginia game at WVU Coliseum.  Fans threw bottles and T-shirts onto the floor midway through the second half of West Virginia's 70-51 win Wednesday against Pitt. With a little more than five minutes remaining, Pitt associate head coach Tom Herrion was hit near the eye with a coin.  He said increased security measures are being considered to curtail the unruly behavior of fans.

Rookie Trevor Bayne won the Daytona 500 Sunday, and becomes the youngest winner of the race. Bayne turned 20 on Saturday. Jeff Gordon had been the youngest Daytona winner, when he won the 1997 race at the age of 25. The win was the fifth Daytona 500 for the historic Wood Brothers team, but their first since 1976, when they won with David Pearson. Carl Edwards finished second. Edwards is the point leader after week one, Bayne is not running for the Sprint Cup championship.

The Pitt Panthers were simply overmatched last night in Morgantown as the West Virginia Mountaineers cruised to a 70-51 win over the Panthers in Big East play yesterday.  The loss was Pitts fourth in their last five games.  To put it in perspective, the last time the Pitt men's basketball team lost four times in a five-game span, Kordell Stewart was the Steelers' quarterback and Mario Lemieux had just unretired for the Penguins. It was late January and early February 2001, under the guidance of second-year coach Ben Howland.  Pitt was outrebounded by WVU 45-31 and put up 20 second chance points.  Jermaine Dixon led the Panthers with 13 points and Ashton Gibbs had 11.  After starting the Big East schedule with five consecutive victories, the Panthers are 6-4 in league play heading into Saturday night's game against Seton Hall.
