The Butler Boys Lacrosse team beat Hampton 14-9 in the WPIAL Division 2 boys' lacrosse championship game Friday night at Chartiers Valley Stadium. Nathan Barthlow scored four goals, Cody Bachman and Cole Harvey had three each and Tyler Kotch had two goals. The Golden Tornado had strong goaltending from Alex Hill. Top-seeded Butler finishes the season 18-2 while Hampton ends up 18-3. The start of the game was delayed one-hour and 45 minutes because of rain and lightning. |

The Butler High boys volleyball team defeated Bethel Park on Friday.
Butler lost the first game but took the next three to win the best-of-five match.

In high school sports yesterday, in girls’ basketball Seneca Valley lost to Pine-Richland 46-34 despite 10 points from Kara Moyer. Knoch defeated Highlands 38-35 behind 12 points from Hannah Novotny. The Mars girls’ dominated Valley last night and cruised to an easy 65-19 win at home. Elaine Hasek and Carly Clark each had 15 points. In one of the lowest scoring games of the season, Freeport lost to West Shamokin last night 28-23, Jessica McFadden had nine points for Freeport. Sharon defeated Grove City by a final score of 55-46. In boys’ basketball last night, Seneca Valley lost to Oliver 60-51 despite 25 points from Christian Durbin. The A-C Valley boys’ continued their winning streak with a 75-69 win over North Clarion. |

Last night in high school girls’ basketball, the Butler Tornado kept their winning streak rolling with a 53-42 win over Altoona in non-section play. Butler was led by Olivia Bresnahan who had 22 points and Cassie Cygan who had 20 points. In boys’ basketball, A-C valley defeated West Forest 70-35 for their ninth win a row; they will take on North Clarion tonight at North Clarion. Karns City lost to Keystone 57-54 and Moniteau lost to Union 71-70 for their second straight loss. In other action last night, Hampton defeated Mars 58-18 in wrestling action. Coming up tonight in girls’ basketball, Seneca Valley will be at Pine-Richland, Knoch will be at home playing host to Highlands, Mars is also at home taking on Center in non-section play, Freeport will be at West Shamokin, Slippery Rock will travel to Titusville and Grove City will be at home taking on Sharon. |

In high school girls’ basketball last night, the Butler Tornado continued their dominance of Section 3 in AAAA with a 70-45 win over second place North Allegheny at Butler. Olivia Bresnahan had 21 for Butler. Seneca Valley lost to Shaler by a final score of 64-39; Alyssa Miller had 15 points for the Raiders. The Knoch girls’ lost to Franklin Regional 35-29; Hannah Novotny had nine points for Knoch. Mars was outscored 32-20 in the second half and would fall to Highlands 52-44; Alexa Lee had 21 points for Mars. Oil City defeated Grove City last night by a final score of 52-49. The A-C Valley boys’ improved to 14-1 with their eighth straight win beating Union 64-60. The Karns City boys’ defeated Ford City 56-54, snapping a five game losing streak. Moniteau lost to Brookeville 47-37. In other high school sports, the Knoch boys’ swim team lost to Cornell 88-79 but the Knoch girls’ team defeated Cornell 97-73. |

Coming up tonight in high school boys’ basketball, the Butler Tornado look to rebound from another section loss when they take on third place North Allegheny at Butler beginning at 7:30 on WBUT 1050AM. The Knoch Knights will look to keep their playoff hopes alive when they travel to Deer Lakes at 7:30 tonight on WISR 680AM. Seneca Valley will play host to Shaler tonight, Mars will be on the road at Highlands, Freeport will be at home against Riverview, Slippery Rock will be at home against Franklin and Grove City will be on the road at Oil City tonight at 7:30. In girls’ basketball tonight, the Karns City girls’ will be at home against Keystone, the Moniteau girls’ will be on the road at Union and the A-C Valley girls’ are on the road at West Forest. |

Coming up tonight in high school girls’ basketball, the Butler girls’ will be at home taking on North Allegheny on WBUT 1050AM at 7:30, Seneca Valley will also be at home tonight taking on Shaler, Knoch will be on the road against Franklin Regional, Mars will be on the road as well taking on Highlands, the Slippery Rock girls’ will be at home taking on Franklin and the Grove City girls ’will be on the road taking on Oil City. All girls’ games tonight are scheduled to begin at 7:30. In boys’ basketball tonight, Karns City will be at home against Ford City and the Moniteau boys’ will be on the road taking on Brookville at 7:30. The Butler Tornado wrestling team is ranked eighth in the WPIAL with a record of 12-2. Cole Baxter of Butler and Nate Cully of Seneca Valley continue to hold on to their number one rankings in their weight divisions. |

In high school girls’ basketball last night, the Butler Tornado remained undefeated in Section 3 play with a 67-43 win over Pine-Richland. Cassie Cygan had 24 points and Olivia Bresnahan chipped in with 19 of her own. Seneca Valley scored only 14 points in the first half and would lose to North Hills 51-30. The Knoch girls’ scored only nine points in the first half and lost to Hampton 49-29, Hannah Novotny had nine points for the Knights. Mars used a strong third quarter to defeat Franklin Regional 53-31, Alexa Lee had 25 points to lead Mars. Freeport played solid defense and got 19 points from Anna Christy and Jessica McFadden in a 75-20 blowout win over Leechburg. In other high school sports last night, Knoch lost to Kittanning 5-1 in hockey. In boys’ swimming, Butler lost to NA 96-78, Knoch defeated Freeport 21-12 and Hampton beat Mars 95-60. In girls’ swimming, it was NA over Butler 109-69, Knoch over Freeport 45-30 and Mars defeating Hampton 103-83. |

In high school sports last night, the A-C Valley boys’ increased their winning streak to six games with a 74-68 hard fought win over Moniteau last night at Moniteau. The Karns City boys’ lost their fourth game in row, this time to Cranberry by a final score of 47-41 at home. In girls’ basketball last night, the A-C Valley girls’ had their three game win streak snapped with a 57-22 loss to Moniteau at home. The Karns City girls’ losing streak hit nine games with a 68-34 loss to Cranberry last night at Cranberry. In other high school sports last night, the Butler boys’ bowling team defeated North Hills 6-1 while the Mars bowling team lost to North Allegheny by a final score of 7-0. In girls’ bowling, it was Butler over North Hills 7-0 and Mars lost to NA by a final score of 5-2. In high school wrestling last night, Butler defeated North Hills 38-29 but lost to NA 33-28 in the championship of the WPIAL team section tournaments. In other wrestling action, Knoch defeated Riverview 42-24. |
