Pirates Win Again Print E-mail

The Pirates added another win to their road record last night in Denver as they beat the Colorado Rockies 6-2 at Coors Field.  It wasn’t without its drama though.

Ross Ohlendorf got the start for the Bucs but lasted less than an inning.  Ohlendorf had two outs in the first before being hit with a line drive in the side of the head, a blow that was heard throughout the stadium and silenced the more than 35,000 fans in attendance.  Ohlendorf never fell to the ground, and though stunned a bit, felt he could continue to pitch – but that didn’t happen.  He was later diagnosed with a bad contusion and abrasion after going to the hospital. But he was back in the dugout before the end of the victory and hopeful afterward that he'd be cleared to make his next start.

Sean Gallagher, summoned from his bullpen seat when Ohlendorf was struck, stabilized the game with three scoreless innings. He issued three walks, but otherwise kept the Rockies hitless.

The bullpen's work was aided by another good night from the offense, which was led by Garrett Jones. The first baseman tied the game with his solo homer in the second before capping a 4-for-4 performance with a solo shot in the eighth. In between, Jones drove in another run with a single and fell a triple short of the cycle.

The win marks the first time the Bucs have won consecutive road games since May 14-15.

The Pirates have a chance to complete the series with a sweep if they can knoch-off the Rockies this afternoon… WISR air time for Pirate Baseball is 2:45.
