The Pittsburgh Pirates played a pair of 'split squad' games Monday afternoon, and dropped both contests. The Bucs lost their second game of the early pre-season to the New York Yankees Monday afternoon, this time 6-0. Pirate starter Paul Maholm allowed two runs on three hits and two walks. Maholm had one strikeout in his first two-inning outing of the spring. The Buccos managed only one hit against the Yanks. Steve Pearce singled in the fifth inning. The Pirates and Yankees meet again Tuesday afternoon. C C Sabathia will make his second start of the pre-season for New York. The Pirates counter with Charlie Morton. In the second split-squad game Tampa Bay edged the Pirates 4-3 in 10-innings. The game featured Pirates' prospects Pedro Alvarez and Jose Tabata, who combined for the Bucs first run. Tabata tripled to right field, and Alvarez followed with an rbi-single. Alvarez also had a triple in the seventh, and scored on Brian Friday's home run. Another Pirate prospect, Brad Lincoln made his second appearance of the spring, and the 24-year-old right-hander allowed one run on two hits and three walks while striking out one in two innings. Lincoln is considered the organization's best pitching prospect and has an outside chance at earning the fifth spot in the rotation if he has a stellar spring.
