The Pittsburgh Steelers, Slippery Rock University and Pitt Panthers will all be on the air Thursday on the Butler County Radio Network.
The Steelers host Carolina in the final pre-season game beginning at 7:30pm at Heinz Field. The Pre-game will begin at 5:30pm on WISR 680am. The Steelers will be looking at a number of players who will be fighting for a roster spot. 22 players will have to be cut from the roster after the game. No rookies have been cut from the team as yet.
Slippery Rock University begins their season against Merrimack College. The game begins at 7pm at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium. SRU is coming off a 6-5 campaign in 2009. They begin with a new quarterback in Ryan Sabo, and a new starting running back with Akeem Satterfield. But they also return 15 starters, including an NFL prospect in center Brandon Fusco, a Seneca Valley graduate. The SRU-Merrimack game can be heard on WBUT 1050am beginning with the Dr. George Mihalik show at 6:30pm.
(The SRU game is being aired on WBUT due to the conflict with the Steelers game Thursday, but the remainder of the Rock schedule can be heard on WISR 680am.)
Immediately following the SRU-Merrimack game, WBUT will join the Pitt-Utah game, which kicks off at 9pm. Pitt will also debut a new quarterback in Tino Sunseri. He is the son of former Panther Sal Sunseri. Pitt returns several standouts from last years team, including wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin, and running back Dion Lewis who is on the Heisman Trophy "watch list". |

Slippery Rock University head coach Dr. George Mihalik has named Ryan Sabo the starting quarterback for the upcoming season. Sabo won a battle over two other quarterbacks in training camp. He missed all of last season after suffering a hand injury in last year's training camp, then suffered a knee injury early this year. He has fully recovered from both injuries. Sabo played at Steel Valley High School. The Rock kicks off their season at home Thursday against Thompson Stadium beginning at 7pm. The game can be heard on WBUT 1050am this week, due to Steelers football on WISR. You will be able to follow the Rock games the rest of the season on WISR 680am. |

The Pittsburgh Pirates snapped a 14-game winless streak on the road by smacking the Chicago Cubs 14-7 Tuesday. A day after Pirate pitching allowed 18 hits and 14 runs, the Pirates banged 15 hits of their own. Pirate second baseman Neil Walker had four of the hits, and drove in four runs. Outfielders Andrew McCutchen and Jose Tabata each had three hits.
Pirate starting pitcher Jeff Karstens, who missed his last start due to "arm fatigue", allowed two runs on four hits over six innings. He did not walk a batter while striking out six. The Bucs and Cubs play the final game of their series Wednesday afternoon. The Pirates will be off Thursday, and will host Washington this weekend. |

Pittsburgh Steelers pre-season action continues this evening as the third pre-season game gets underway this evening. That's when the Black-and-Gold is hosted by the Denver Broncos at Invesco Field. Head coach Mike Tomlin still isn't saying who will be his starting quarterback once the regular season begins, and probably won't until right before the first regular-season game on Sunday, September 12th against the Atlanta Falcons. Kickoff for tonight's game is at 8pm, and you can hear all the action on AM 680 WISR.
The starting quarterback mystery also exists at Penn State, as Joe and Jay Paterno and offensive coordinator Galen Hall still aren't saying much about who will start for the Nittany Lions this season. Sophomores Kevin Newsome and Matt McGloin, and freshmen Paul Jones and Robert Bolden are the top contenders, but Joe Paterno may name a starter during a press conference Tuesday, four days before Penn State opens its season against FCS opponent Youngstown State at Beaver Stadium. Kickoff is at 12 o'clock on AM 680 WISR.
There's no mystery on the starting QB for Pitt, but there will be high expectations for Tino Sunseri, a redshirt sophomore and a first-year starter for the Panthers after spending last season as backup to Bill Stull. Pitt opens its 2010 season Thursday at Utah. Kickoff is at 8:30pm, and AM 1050 WBUT will carry that game immediately following the 7pm game between Slippery Rock and Merrimack University, which will also be carried on WBUT.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review has put Butler Golden Tornado head coach Jim Rankin at the top of their list of the ten new football coaches to watch in the WPIAL. Rankin was especially noted for his 18 successful years at North Allegheny, including WPIAL and state titles in 1990. Rankin will have his work cut out for him though, as Butler's only had 25 wins in ten years. The Golden Tornado opens the season this Friday when they travel to New Castle for a 7:30pm game. Hear it on AM 1050 WBUT.
In Butler Area Midget Football, Meridian defeated East Butler 18-14 in the first varsity game, and in the second game from yesterday, Center Township beat Butler city by a score of 24-14.
Lorenzo Cain's RBI single in the 11th inning lifted the Milwaukee Brewers to an 8-7 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the second of a three-game series last night. Kameron Loe got the win and Zach Duke took the loss. The Pirates have one last chance to fend off a series sweep in the final game this afternoon. The first pitch is thrown at 2:10pm, and you can hear all the action on AM 680 WISR. |
