The Butler Area Sewer Authority board this morning moved a step closer towards making the Deshon Act 537 Plan project a reality.

The board voted to advertise for bids for the improvements, and once the bids are received and approved, a construction date can be set.  However, that all depends on financing.  BASA executive director Tom Rokovich told Radio Butler News they hope to get a PennVest loan to finance it, but construction will definitely begin this summer, with a target completion date of December of next year.

In other business, BASA officials voted to proceed with the second of two alternative options presented for the Dutchtown Road Sewer Project.  The first one involves a project cost of $140,000, with only one right-of-way needed.  The second would only cost $80,000, but would require seven more rights-of-way, according to BASA project engineer Dan Slomers, who says that BASA has already successfully obtained five.  Following a brief executive session, the board voted to adopt three separate Declaration of Taking resolutions, which would condemn two of the three remaining properties, and the third one would be waived if BASA reaches an agreement with the property owner.

Finally, BASA manager John Schon reported more than five million gallons of overflows for the month of January.  That was due to the wet and snowy weather, and a broken sewer line on Cherokee Drive in Center Township.  Schon said that the line was damaged during a new construction of a home on that street back in 1985, when other utilities used BASA's right-of-way to install their service.
