It was 26 years ago today that a Butler County girl stepped off her school bus and never returned home. And today, her family and law enforcement authorities are still trying to find answers.
On this date in 1985, Cherrie Mahan left her bus that afternoon, but never made it some 50 yards to her front door along Cornplanter Road in Winfield Township. Close to 3,000 pages of testimony from potential leads over more than a quarter century still have not turned up any answers on Cherrie's fate.
Trooper Bob McGraw of the Butler State Police barracks, said last month that there's a chance that Cherrie could still be alive, but if new evidence believed to have provided a long-awaited break in the case proves to be correct, then the likelihood of that will have diminished substantially, if not altogether.
Trooper McGraw has not returned calls to our newsroom as of yet.
