A receptionist at a dentist's office in Dayton is accused of stealing from an Elderton woman in December.

State Police contend 50-year-old Janice Young of Elderton took checks and a driver's license from the victim's purse while the handbag was stored under Young's desk.

Troopers say Young used the checks and the ID to make purchases at stores in the Kittanning and Indiana areas.

The items purchased with the forged checks came to almost 550 dollars.

State Police have been busy all night responding to crashes and reports of stuck vehicles.

Many roads are still snow covered and authorities are urging travel only when necessary.

Please do not call police for road information. This ties up officers and phone lines needed for response to emergencies.

The state's 5-1-1 road information line is operating.

It was 26 years ago today that a Butler County girl stepped off her school bus and never returned home. And today, her family and law enforcement authorities are still trying to find answers.

On this date in 1985, Cherrie Mahan left her bus that afternoon, but never made it some 50 yards to her front door along Cornplanter Road in Winfield Township. Close to 3,000 pages of testimony from potential leads over more than a quarter century still have not turned up any answers on Cherrie's fate.

Trooper Bob McGraw of the Butler State Police barracks, said last month that there's a chance that Cherrie could still be alive, but if new evidence believed to have provided a long-awaited break in the case proves to be correct, then the likelihood of that will have diminished substantially, if not altogether.

Trooper McGraw has not returned calls to our newsroom as of yet.

The snowfall that began this afternoon is causing many problems for area motorists.

Most of the crash activity started getting underway at the start of the three o'clock hour, with multiple crashes being reported in Butler, Penn, Winfield, Jackson and Center Townships. A tractor-trailer is also reported to be stuck on New Castle hill just outside of the Butler city limits. More crashes were reported for the rest of the afternoon, some of them involving multiple vehicles.

All major roadways going in and out of Butler County should be treated as dangerous. PennDot crews are out treating roads, but secondary roads may not be treated right away. If you must travel, stay on the main roads.

Butler city Mayor Maggie Stock is asking residents to only leave their homes in the event of a bona fide emergency, so that crews can continue to clear snow from roads and remove stranded vehicles.

Testimony continued today in the corruption trial of state Senator Jane Orie.

Taking the stand today was Josh Dott, who worked for Senator Orie for about six years. He testified that the office was in what he called a "frantic mode" when he showed up for work the morning of October 30th. That was the morning that intern Jennifer Rioja resigned and filed a complaint with the Allegheny County District Attorney's office.

Dott testified that he was instructed by Orie's now former Chief of Staff, Jamie Pavlot, to place an Orie campaign sign in the office above her district office to make it look like a campaign office, and then helped carry boxes out of the office the following Sunday. By that time, the office was under surveillance.

Orie is accused of having her state-paid constituent staff perform campaign work for herself and her sister while still on the clock. Dott and Pavlot, who takes the stand tomorrow, were both offered immunity from prosecution in exchange for their testimony.

Butler County 911 reports injuries in a Marion Township crash that happened just before the start of the noon hour.

According to emergency radio transmissions, there was a vehicle accident on Boyers Road just west of the village of Boyers. Our newsroom has also learned that a utility pole was sheared in half by the impact, leaving downed lines on the roadway and the road closed for about an hour and a half between Allison and Ferguson Roads.

At least one person was reported hurt in that crash. They were taken to Grove City Medical Center for treatment, after medical helicopters were unable to go up due to the weather.

All units were back in station by 2pm.
